Battling irritation in his left knee, first baseman Jeff Clement was placed on the 15-day disabled list on Monday. His placement was made retroactive to Saturday, meaning that Clement will be eligible to return as early as Sept.

Unable to break out of an offensive funk that has dragged on through most of the month, the Pirates fell to the Mets, 5-1, in a rain-shortened contest Saturday in front of 28,759 fans at PNC Park.
