The Pittsburgh Pirates waited until they were 50 games below .500 before playing their best baseball of a miserable season. Charlie Morton pitched effectively over six innings to win for the first time in 4 1/2 months, Pedro Alvarez homered and drove in four runs and the Pirates extended the St. Louis Cardinals’ late-season collapse by winning 11-6 on Wednesday night.

Times wires Friday, September 3, 2010 Pirates 8, Nationals 5 PITTSBURGH  The Pirates’ rookie regulars keyed the win. Pedro Alvarez hit a two-run double in the fifth. Jose Tabata had two hits and two RBIs, and Neil Walker extended his hitting streak to 10 games.

PITTSBURGH, Aug. 8 (UPI) — Pedro Alvarez’s two-out, three-run blast in the bottom of the 10th inning Saturday sent the Pittsburgh Pirates to a stunning 8-7 win over the Colorado Rockies.
