Dallas, TX (Sports Network) – Pittsburgh Pirates Director of Media Relations
Jim Trdinich has been named the winner of the 2011 Robert O. Fishel Award for
Public Relations Excellence.

Trdinich just completed his 27th season in Major League Baseball, including
his 23rd as a full-time member of the Pirates’ front office.

In 1987 Trdinich joined the National League office, working under the
direction of 1994 Fishel Award winner Katy Feeney for two years. In 1989, he
returned to the Pirates as Assistant Director of Media Relations, and he
became the club’s Director of Media Relations at the age of 26 in 1991.

During Trdinich’s tenure, the Pirates have hosted two All-Star Games (1994 and
2006), and he has contributed to MLB’s media relations efforts for several
National League Championship Series and Midsummer Classics.

The Fishel Award, named after the longtime baseball executive, goes to the
“active non-uniformed representative of Major League Baseball whose ethics,
character, dedication, service, professionalism and humanitarianism best
represent the standards propounded by Robert O. Fishel.”

Fishel Award nominees are submitted by representatives of the 30 Major League
Clubs and league officials. The nominees are voted upon by active past winners
and the leadership of the BBWAA.

An executive with the Cleveland Indians, the St. Louis Browns, the New York
Yankees, and the American League office, Fishel was the inaugural winner of
the Award in 1981.

PITTSBURGH (Reuters) – St. Louis outfielder Allen Craig repaid his manager’s faith in him by hitting two home runs to lift the Cardinals to a 7-2 win over the Pittsburgh Pirates on Wednesday.

Craig, in his second year in Major League Baseball, had failed to record a hit since returning on August 10 from a fractured knee cap that sidelined him for two months.

St. Louis manager Tony La Russa was sure the young player could still deliver.

“I watched him when he was healthy (and) I said it several times — I’d like to get him in the lineup,” La Russa told reporters. “The guy’s already proven he deserves playing time.”

Craig proved his worth by smashing a two-run homer in the opening inning where the Cardinals went ahead 3-0, then added a solo blast in the seventh to give the visitors a 5-2 advantage.

St. Louis added two more runs in the eighth and finished with 15 hits, four from Craig along with three from Yadier Molina, to cruise to a much-needed victory.

“It was definitely a big win to stop things there and end this series with a win,” Craig said. “It would have been tough to lose this game.”

St. Louis eluded a third consecutive defeat to the Pirates (58-64) and avoid falling further behind in the National League Central.

The Cardinals (66-58) are seven games behind leaders Milwaukee (72-51), who beat the Los Angeles Dodgers on Wednesday.

St. Louis starter Kyle Lohse pitched seven innings to record his 11th victory of the season. Lohse allowed a two-run homer to Jose Tabata in the fifth but struck out seven during an impressive outing.

Pittsburgh pitcher Paul Maholm (6-14) took the loss after surrendering three runs in five innings before giving way to the bullpen.

The Pirates were riding high at the top of the NL Central last month and moving toward their first post-season appearance since 1992 but a 10-game losing streak halted their momentum and they now trail Milwaukee by 14 games.

PITTSBURGH — Upon further review, he’s out.

Major League Baseball acknowledged Wednesday umpire Jerry Meals made the wrong call in Atlanta’s 4-3, 19th-inning win over Pittsburgh.

Meals ruled Pittsburgh catcher Mike McKenry failed to tag Atlanta’s Julio Lugo in the bottom of the 19th, allowing Lugo to score the winning run. Replays showed McKenry clearly tagging Lugo well before Lugo got to the plate.

The Pirates filed a formal complaint hours after the longest game in team history, and MLB executive vice president for baseball operations Joe Torre said it appeared Meals got the call wrong.

Torre said the tag was applied and the game should have remained tied. Torre said he spoke to Meals and “no one feels worse than him.”

Former Princeton High School and University of Cincinnati standout Josh Harrison made his Major League Baseball debut with the Pittsburgh Pirates May 31.

Harrison, 23, had two hits in the game, including a clutch RBI single that helped lead the Pirates to a 5-1 win over the New York Mets.

Josh Harrison, pictured during his playinig days at UC, made an immediate impact for the Pittsburgh Pirates during his big-league debut, May 31. Terrence Huge/Contributor

He was promoted to the big leagues after positing the International League’s fifth highest batting average (.321) for Triple-A Indianapolis. He also eight doubles, two triples and 11 RBI in 27 games during the 2011 season.

Here the infielder chats about tough Greater Miami Conference competition, being called up to the Pirates and his mentality during his first big-league game.

Did you ever imagine playing Major League Baseball?

“It’s always been a goal of mine, ever since I was a young kid. Once I started playing ball, I wanted to play in the majors and that came true a few days ago.”

How did you get your start playing baseball?

“I was 3 years old, and I wanted to play. The only way I could play was if my mom could coach. So my mom was my first coach.”

Who was your inspiration growing up?

“Both of my parents (Vincent and Bonita Harrison), and my older brothers (Vince Harrison Jr. and Shaun Harrison), because I was always at their games. They were good and I learned a lot from watching them.”

What do you remember about playing baseball in the Greater Miami Conference?

“It’s a great conference. It was always a challenge in the GMC. We didn’t win it while I was there, but that’s because it’s always tough.”

Do you make it back to Cincinnati often?

“Yeah, definitely…In the offseason, I’m back there. Whenever I get home, I have a chance to meet up with the guys and catch up.”

What’s your favorite thing to do when you’re home?

“I liked to relax and chill and hang with the family and friends.”

Were you a Reds fan growing up?

“No, I didn’t have a favorite team growing up. I was just rooting for the team my uncle, John Shelby, was coaching for… I think he was with the Dodgers the most.”

You also played at UC. Are you looking forward to playing in front of your hometown crowd at Great American Ballpark?

“It will be very exciting. I’ll be able to see a lot of my family that won’t be able to make it to Pittsburgh.”

How did you find out you were getting called to the show?

“Our trainer called me and sent me to the manager’s office. When I walked in, they normally play a joke. They had a big smile on their faces and told me congratulations, and I was going up.”

In your first big-league game, you had two hits. One of those was a clutch RBI single that helped lead the Pirates to victory. Were you nervous?

“I was very comfortable. Guys kept asking me if I was nervous, but I was comfortable from the first pitch. I was as confident as I’ve always been.”
