PITTSBURGH — The Pittsburgh Pirates have declined options on pitcher Paul Maholm, catchers Ryan Doumit and Chris Snyder and shortstop Ronny Cedeno.

The move allows each player to become a free agent.

Maholm was due $9.75 million in salary next season. The 29-year-old lefthander is 53-73 in seven seasons with the Pirates. He went 6-14 with a 3.66 ERA in 2011 and ended the season on the disabled list with arm trouble.

Doumit and Snyder battled injuries last season. Snyder hit .271 in 34 before going out with back problems while Doumit hit .303 with 30 RBIs in 77 games but missed all of June and July with a leg injury.

Cedeno hit .249 in 2011 but consistently found himself in manager Clint Hurdle’s doghouse due to mental lapses.

Pittsburgh, PA (Sports Network) – The Pittsburgh Pirates have declined club
options on pitcher Paul Maholm, infielder Ronny Cedeno and catchers Ryan
Doumit and Chris Snyder.

Maholm, who has spent all seven of his major league seasons with Pittsburgh,
struggled to a 6-14 record and 3.66 earned run average in 26 starts this past
year.

Cedeno batted .249 with two homers and 32 RBI in 128 games with Pittsburgh in
2011.

Doumit hit .303 with eight home runs and 30 RBI over 77 games, while Snyder
batted .271 with three homers and 17 RBI in 34 contests.

Pirates place Doumit and Pearce on DL

Flushing, NY (Sports Network) – The Pittsburgh Pirates placed catcher Ryan
Doumit and infielder Steve Pearce on the 15-day disabled list Monday.

Doumit is suffering from a left ankle sprain, while Pearce has a right calf
strain.

Doumit left Sunday’s game against the Cubs after injuring his ankle in the
second inning.

Doumit was blocking the plate as Carlos Pena came running in from third trying
to score on Koyie Hill’s fly ball. The catcher was several feet up the third-
base line, and Pena slid into the lower half of his left leg as the throw from
right field came to the plate. Doumit’s ankle was caught underneath Pena
during the slide, and he limped around in pain after the runner was ruled
safe.

Pearce left Saturday’s contest against the Cubs after feeling soreness in his
right calf while advancing to second on a throw to home plate after hitting a
single.

Doumit is carrying a .269 batting average with four home runs and 15 RBI,
while Pearce is batting .291 with one homer and 10 RBI.

To fill the roster spots, the Pirates have selected the contracts of catcher
Dusty Brown and infielder Josh Harrison from Triple-A Indianapolis.

Brown appeared in seven games for the Boston Red Sox last season where he hit
.250 with two RBI. Harrison has yet to appear in a major league game but ranks
fifth in the International League with a .321 batting average this season.

Pittsburgh also transferred pitcher Ross Ohlendorf from the 15-day disabled
list to the 60-day DL because of a right shoulder posterior strain.

One look at his batting splits will quickly tell you that Ryan Doumit is a better left-handed hitter than he is right-handed. Even so, his manager thinks it's important to give Doumit some starts in right field against left-handed pitching.

Though Ryan Doumit is eligible to come off the disabled list on Friday, the Pirates' plan is to wait until Saturday before having the catcher rejoin the club.
